Coach

Definition: A Coach is a trained expert who accompanies clients (coachees) in a goal-oriented and solution-focused process.

The coach supports the client in realizing their potential, developing their Goals and overcome personal challenges.

Coaches work in different areas, such as Life Coaching, Business Coaching, Career coaching or health coaching.

Tasks and role of the coach:

  • Active listening: The coach listens attentively to the client, shows Empathy and understanding.
  • Ask questions: By asking specific questions, the coach encourages the client to reflect and helps them to adopt new perspectives.
  • Clarification of objectives: The coach supports the client in defining their goals and ensures clarity and focus.
  • Resource activation: The coach helps the client to recognize and use their strengths and resources.
  • Development of options for action: The coach works together with the client to develop new options for action and solution strategies.
  • Motivation and support: The coach motivates the client to pursue their goals and supports them in implementing their plans.

Qualifications and training:

  • Training to become a coach is not regulated by law in Germany. However, there are various reputable training institutes that offer certified coaching training courses.
  • Reputable training courses generally cover topics such as communication, psychology, coaching methods and Ethics.
  • Many coaches also have professional experience in related fields, e.g. psychology, human resources or management.

Important characteristics of a coach:

  • Professional competence: The coach has in-depth knowledge in the field of Coaching and the relevant methods.
  • Social competence: The coach has strong social skills such as active listening, empathy, strong communication skills and the ability to deal with conflict.
  • Personal integrity: The coach acts in accordance with ethical principles and is subject to a duty of confidentiality.

Differences to other consulting activities:

  • Therapist: In contrast to therapists who deal with psychological problems, the coach focuses on the client's present and future and supports them in achieving their goals.
  • Consultant: While consultants often suggest concrete solutions, the coach encourages the client to develop solutions independently.
