Career advice and application

One thing should be made clear in advance, application coaching is a part of Career coaching. Career counseling - career and application coaching.

A sewing machine and a mannequin. Career advice and application

When you talk about career, Coaching or career counseling, we usually talk about helping a client from job A to job B.

But sometimes it also means questioning the career path you are currently on and changing it so that you are perceived differently in the company.

What are the first steps in application coaching?

The first step is to take a close look at the client's career (the career coach's homework). Is there a common thread? Is consistency and loyalty to the employer recognizable or has the client changed jobs every 12 months?

With targeted questions, the application coach then tries to understand why there have been too many or too few job changes during career counseling?

It is the job of the career coach to find out which is the „optimal“ job for the client? The coach usually uses various methods that have been tried and tested hundreds of times. One of the most frequently used methods is à the IKIGAI.

After evaluating the IKIGAI and after various interviews, the career coach knows exactly what the „ideal“ job is for the client.

Now it's about deciding whether you're already in the right job or whether you need to change jobs to pursue your passion.

If you have to change jobs, the career coach becomes an application coach.

What do you do in career counseling?

The question is quickly answered. An application coach helps with the application. Simply put, but very complicated to implement. In the first step, the application coach analyzes the existing application and checks it for completeness and coherence.

The CV is then enhanced and optimized. Modern format, modern photo, appropriate wording, etc.

Now the CV is ready. Even if this process sounds simple, it can take several weeks to create the „perfect“ CV. Good cooperation between client and career coach will shorten the time considerably.

Once the CV is ready, the career coach mobilizes his entire network. „Hello world, I have a great candidate with a representative CV! Who would be interested?“

This is how most jobs are arranged these days. Vitamin B and networks are immensely important. A career coach without a suitable network is a one-way street. They may be able to work with the client to get their documents in shape, but unfortunately this application coach cannot place you. Have you already read our article about Business Coaching read?

How can career counseling help me?

If our clients are at an impasse in their current job, we as career coaches usually step in very spontaneously. In doing so, we have to create prospects for the client. But what exactly does that mean? Let's take Achim, for example. Achim has been in the same job and working for the same company for 34 years. Achim has two children whom he would now like to support financially. To do this, Achim needs an annual salary increase, but his salary has remained the same over the past 5 years and has only increased by a minimal 1-2 %. How should Achim now behave and position himself in order to receive an annual 5-7 % salary increase? What are the right steps and what is the strategy? This is the core competence and the task of the career coach, who helps Achim to get out of the one-way street of „salary“. Talk to us about career advice.

Other potential clients for career coaching contact us because they are earning well but are not progressing on the career ladder. Vera, for example, has focused on a specialist career and is now head developer at the company, but is not part of management. This upsets Vera greatly and she wants to do something about it. This is the moment when the career coach comes back into play. How can you turn a specialist career into a management career? What does Vera need to do and what training and qualifications are necessary to move the needle from a specialist to a management career? For some of our clients, a Professional reorientation an option.

Take Tim, for example:

Tim approached us with a different request. There is a job advertisement that he thinks is the perfect fit for him, but he needs coaching to prepare for the position and get through the 4-stage selection process. An experienced career coach can also help with this, as only a career coach knows exactly whether Tim's CV makes him suitable for the job? The career coach can help Tim to get through the selection process and the assessment center without any problems. Of course, hiring a career coach costs Tim money, but it pays for itself 10-20 times over if Tim gets the job with the support. Our experts will support you with career advice.

Take Martina, for example:

Martina approached the Coaching Institute with a completely different problem. She was being bullied and disrespected in the company, even though she was a member of top management. Here it is the job of the career coach to first listen carefully. To understand what provokes this behavior from colleagues and whether Martina is perhaps the trigger for the whole process. Through in-depth analysis, the career coach can then provide Martina with the right tools to not only stop the bullying, but to actively engage in self-marketing for herself. Another phenomenon that we observe time and again with our new clients is „overload“. Peter was thrown in at the deep end without any preparation and now has to set up a new department. He lacks resources, experience and a mentor.

Example Peter:

Peter is afraid to ask for help as he may then be perceived as weak and unsuitable for the job. So Peter gives his all and is completely overwhelmed by the situation and after a few months is on the verge of burnout or psychological collapse. Here, too, the career coach can help quickly and effectively. Peter actively learns to ask for help, delegate tasks and find a mentor in the company who can help him with all his unanswered questions. By spreading the load over several shoulders, Peter no longer feels overwhelmed by the task and the burn-out that would have put Peter out of action for several months is averted. Career counseling gives our clients a massive competitive advantage.

We have learned from hundreds of hours of coaching that it is essential to have a coach at your side when making important career decisions. Practical tips: How to get the most out of your coaching

The success of a coaching process depends largely on your own willingness and preparation. Before you start coaching, you should take the time to clearly formulate your goals. What exactly do you want to change? What specific results do you expect? The more precise your objectives, the more focused the coaching process can be.

Between the individual sessions, it is important to actively integrate the insights you have gained into your everyday life. Keep a coaching diary in which you record your progress, challenges and "aha" moments. This reflection reinforces the transfer effect and makes your personal development visible. Many of our clients report that the time between sessions is crucial for lasting change.

Be open to new perspectives and be prepared to question habitual thought patterns. A good coach will challenge you without overwhelming you. Trust the process, even if individual steps seem unfamiliar at first. The best results are achieved when you get involved in the collaboration and play an active role in shaping it. Our experience at Ihr Coaching Institut in Frankfurt has shown that clients who have this basic attitude achieve their goals much faster and more sustainably.
